We’re really proud of all of these new images, but there are a few that stand out. Our new Open Liberty base image is a great server runtime environment. With CockroachDB, users can build, scale, and manage modern, data-intensive applications. And Bun is a Javascript runtime and toolkit that makes it easy to run and test apps.
Open Liberty
Overview: Open Liberty is a highly composable, fast to start, dynamic application server runtime environment. It’s a lightweight framework designed for building fast and efficient cloud-native Java microservices.
What’s New: Our Open Liberty base image is Wolfi-based, unlike upstream, which leverages Ubuntu and UBI.
Use Cases: Open Liberty is a solid choice for environments utilizing cloud-native Java microservices and applications that are looking for faster startup times and more efficient cloud resource utilization.
CockroachDB
Overview: CockroachDB is a cloud-native distributed SQL database built for cloud applications. It is designed to provide an easier path to horizontal scaling, greatly increasing capacity.
What’s New: The Chainguard CockroachDB image has been released with an OpenSSL equivalent, giving its users access to a version that prioritizes security, non-root execution, and minimal runtime dependencies.
Use Cases: CockroachDB is great for any company looking to horizontally scale their cluster, in situations where data and user load is increasing rapidly.
Bun
Overview: Bun is a Javascript runtime and package manager built using Zig. It’s considered an “all-in-one toolkit” for Javascript and Typescript applications.
What’s New: Chainguard’s Bun image is designed with security in mind, with zero CVEs and detailed provenance and software bill of materials (SBOMs).
Use Cases: Bun is primarily used for developing web applications where high performance and fast startup times are crucial. It also has prototyping and local development benefits.
